In his 2009 letter to shareholders, Bezos declared that Amazon had begun waging war on muda, the Japanese word for waste. The more he could get rid of needless costs, the easier it would be to deliver rock-bottom prices to customers. This crusade, he wrote, was “incredibly energizing.”
Bezos keeps an eerily tight rein on expenses, eschewing color printers in favor of trusty old black-and-white models.
